Springtime at Madera, 2001

Once again, the Madera Poker Run was a huge success offering something for everyone. Several changes were made this year including 70% new trail which cut off some old sections and provided some outstanding "woodsy sections". There were also some great mudholes for the two wheel drive atv's to be captured in and the 4x4's to root around in...especially the swamp hole below rt 153. Also, the trails were extended in mileage to about the 30 mark.

As usual, it rained on Saturday...once again making the entire railbed a sloppy entrance to what would be followed by a free-for-all in the first section of wooded trail.

Registration began Saturday night with the folks camping overnight to eliminate the morning rush. The "furthest traveler award" goes to the crew from Vermont (pictured with the Bigfoot kit). Riders came from New Jersey, Maryland, Virginia, New York, Ohio and of course Pa. This event set a new all-time record of 1480 in attendence...filling the ballfield to capacity. Door prizes (something new) were awarded at checkpoint #4 at the registration table. Several nice items were given away including a couple purses of $100.00 cash!
The event went smoothly with only one ambulance ride for a dirtbike rib injury. Another fellow outdid himself on the hillclimb under the powerline....leaving his big 4x4 with two less tires/rims for the rest of the ride and his pride laying at the bottom of the hill. They managed to get to the next checkpoint for a lift back to the parking area.

M & S Cycle was on hand once again to provide an excellent supply of goodies for riders needing parts and accessories both before and along the trail. They are continuing to grow in popularity with the awesome deals with riding gear and parts...seeming to "have it all" considering the small shop with stuff piled to the ceiling! They are located off the beaten path...just walking distance accross from the ballfield in downtown Madera.

According to Captain Josh Robison, "All went well and Madera Volunteer Fire Company would like to extend our thanks to all who showed to support us...see you in June".
